Parents who have a child with special needs have been given the opportunity to attend Caring with Confidence sessions at Tweendykes Special School in Hull.
Organised by local Provider NHS Hull / Carers Centre Hull and supervised by one of the schools volunteers, the sessions were held over seven weeks during school hours in one of the classrooms.
Sam Chaney, Caring with Confidence co-ordinator at Carers Centre Hull, said: “Strong relationships have developed between the parent carers over the seven weeks with the stories, tips and advice they shared and they continue to meet for coffee outside the sessions. The school is now looking into holding monthly coffee mornings for the parents to help them continue getting together.
“We found that a lot of the issues that arose for this group of carers showed different angles and priorities compared to some other carers. Because of this, we have developed a separate ‘local information’ folder specifically for children’s services and the transition period for children to adult services, which was an area of concern for many parents.”
The Caring with Confidence team in Hull are now building on the work with Tweendykes Special School by holding sessions at a local children’s charity, The Echoes Foundation and are liaising with other special needs schools to run more sessions in the area.
