Chinese carers take part in Caring with Confidence

A group of Cantonese and Mandarin speaking carers in Gloucestershire have benefitted from taking part in Caring with Confidence after the local Provider of the programme partnered with the Gloucestershire Chinese Community Association.

Gloucestershire County Council delivered the sessions at the Chinese Community Centre in Gloucester, with the support of Qing Lin, a community agent who helped translate activities and interpret in Mandarin and Cantonese.

Chris Cam, Caring with Confidence Project Manager at Gloucestershire County Council, said: “There are so many people out there looking after the needs of family members, friends and neighbours that don’t even regard themselves as carers. The Caring with Confidence programme is helping us support carers in other groups that can be hard to reach, such as those who don’t have English as their first language.”

Carers have their say

Caring with Confidence are giving carers in the North West the chance to take part in a new survey to help improve the learning and training opportunities available to unpaid carers.

The survey, which can be accessed online or by calling 0800 849 2349 to request a printed copy, will identify carers’ attitudes towards the learning and training opportunities they have participated in and what they would like to see more of.

Organisations based in the North West that provide support or training for carers are also being questioned on the services they provide. This data will also contribute to a new online directory of services.

Carers in the classroom

Parents who have a child with special needs have been given the opportunity to attend Caring with Confidence sessions at Tweendykes Special School in Hull.

Organised by local Provider NHS Hull / Carers Centre Hull and supervised by one of the schools volunteers, the sessions were held over seven weeks during school hours in one of the classrooms.

Sam Chaney, Caring with Confidence co-ordinator at Carers Centre Hull, said: “Strong relationships have developed between the parent carers over the seven weeks with the stories, tips and advice they shared and they continue to meet for coffee outside the sessions. The school is now looking into holding monthly coffee mornings for the parents to help them continue getting together.

“We found that a lot of the issues that arose for this group of carers showed different angles and priorities compared to some other carers. Because of this, we have developed a separate ‘local information’ folder specifically for children’s services and the transition period for children to adult services, which was an area of concern for many parents.”

The Caring with Confidence team in Hull are now building on the work with Tweendykes Special School by holding sessions at a local children’s charity, The Echoes Foundation and are liaising with other special needs schools to run more sessions in the area.
